This week, our staff explored new trends changing the way the worlds of manufacturing, capitalism, and expanding cities and finds out how the internet gifted Detroit with RoboCop.

The printed world (The Economist)—A “new industrial revolution” of faster, cheaper, and more precise 3D printers could make it easier for many more people to make things.—Tom Feltner, Vice President

Creating Shared Value: How to Reinvent Capitalism—and Unleash a Wave of Innovation and Growth (Harvard Business Review)— I find the authors’ concept of shared value to be similar to the ideas behind the Community Reinvestment Act. The authors define “shared value” as “policies and operating practices that enhance competitiveness of a company while simultaneously advancing the economic and social conditions in the communities in which it operates” and argue that “shared value focuses companies on…profits that create societal benefits rather than diminish them.”—Dory Rand, President

Detroit Needs a RoboCop (io9)– Does anything more need to be said?—Geoff Smith, Senior Vice President

Underground Master Plan of Helsinki—Helsinki is expanding down instead of out, carving everything from churches to swimming pools out of bedrock.—Sarah Duda, Senior Research and Project Associate

How Skyscrapers Can Save the City (The Atlantic)—Edward Glaeser argues that, while unpopular with preservationists, building skyscrapers could make our cities more affordable and accessible. —Katie Buitrago, Policy and Communications Associate
