Happy holidays, loyal Woodstock readers. As the new year approaches, we decided to try something new with our blog and introduce a feature showcasing the best of the Internet through the eyes of our talented staffers. Every week, our staff will highlight articles that have caught their attention on issues related—or not—to economic security and community prosperity. We hope you get to know us a little better and discover something new in the meantime. Below is the first installment—a shortened one, since some of our crew is on vacation:

10 Worst Places to Live (Wallet Pop)—One website takes a look at “unemployment rates, health data, the number of foreclosures, crime statistics, climate and other measures of misery” and comes up with a list of the 10 worst places to live. Is your hometown on the list? —Beverly Berryhill, Administrative Associate

Ike’s Speech (New Yorker)—An unexpected find by the descendants of President Eisenhower’s speechwriter leads to new revelations about the President’s farewell speech that famously coined “military-industrial complex” and underscores how strongly the General felt on the need to restrict that sector’s influence in politics. —Katie Buitrago, Policy and Communications Associate

A Physicist Solves the City (New York Times Magazine)—A physicist tries to solve the urban tangle by asking: are there universal laws that govern the way cities work? —Sarah Duda, Research and Project Associate

Nobody Told Me There’d Be Days Like These (The Pickled Tongue blog)—An interesting take on the ups, downs, and challenges of running a small business (in this case, a food truck) in Chicago. —Geoff Smith, Senior Vice President
