Educate your communities about the dangers of refund anticipation loans
Written by Katie Buitrago
March 04, 2010

By now, we know that refund anticipation loans (RALs) are expensive, risky, and target low-wealth taxpayers and communities of color.

So what can you do about it?

If you work in any organization with ties to the community, prominently display Woodstock's fact sheet "Get the most out of your income tax refund: Avoid tax refund anticipation loans!" The flyer clears up common misconceptions about RALs and shows how much they really cost. Information is provided for finding free tax preparation sites.

If you are an employer, you can post the flyer in your break room or another highly visible location to encourage your employees to get the most out of their refund.

Armed with the knowledge of all of their options, taxpayers can make better decisions about how to receive their refund.
