On Thursday, Senator Mark Kirk will make it clear where he stands on ending tricks and traps in the consumer financial marketplace when the full Senate votes on Richard Cordray’s nomination to direct the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). We urge him to stop his attempts to weaken the agency and confirm the nomination of Richard Cordray as the CFPB’s permanent director.

Contact Senator Kirk’s office now at 202-224-2854 and ask him to vote Yes on Richard Cordray for CFPB director.

A runaway mortgage market and a lack of regulatory oversight allowed the abuses that led to the financial crisis. In the now nearly three years that have followed, financial industry tricks and traps are still taking billions of dollars out of consumers’ pockets. A fully functioning, independent CFPB is critical to building an economy that works for all of us.

The CFPB must have a Director in place to assume its full powers, especially over payday lenders, mortgage companies, credit bureaus, and other non-banks. And it needs a Director with the full authority to stand up for Main Street, and stand up to Wall Street and financial industry special interests. Everyone in Washington needs to know that Illinoisans are watching how Mark Kirk will vote on this crucial nomination.

No one has questioned Richard Cordray’s fitness for the job; his effectiveness, fairness, and stalwart defense of the public interest have been praised by everyone from business leaders to consumer activists and the sheriffs of his home state. Blocking his nomination is all about protecting big banks on Wall Street and preventing the CFPB from protecting consumers.
